Instant tranquility with reconversion of 80’s villa amid the Flemish countryside.

The client’s question was, “How can we thoroughly refresh and expand our 80’s home with a maximum sense of space where tranquility is the common thread throughout?”. The family was looking for a warm and minimalist, but above all timeless architecture where the experience of space was paramount.

We found a place with a lac of poetry, a place restricted and outlined, a place where connections with the outside environment were completely lost. The experience from the house to the surroundings was completely lost and blocked by all kinds of attached constructions around the house. In order to keep the house livable in the long term, the main functions for the parents were positioned on the ground floor. The rooms for the children - who would move out after a few years - were made king of the house upstairs.

Seen from the street, the house forms an elongated ensemble that positions itself humbly and not ostentatiously. A rather closed character on the street side is balanced by a transparent façade on the garden side. To break up this large transparent façade and still guarantee intimacy, a rhythm with robust volumes was introduced.

By means of a pure and precisely modelled plan and façade design, fascinating views were created that create a poetic interaction with the surrounding landscape. The nearby landscape was carefully designed by the landscape architects Pieters Faché.

A rough façade finish and a monolithic floor were combined with wooden afrormozia accents. These warm wooden elements that flow seamlessly into the interior are flanked by some subtle natural stone and brass elements.
